Sosok.ID – US President-elect, Joe Biden, assured that the US would help Japan to protect the Archipelago Senkaku which is currently in dispute with China.
Biden on Thursday (12/11) held a telephone conversation for the first time with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
The two new leaders agreed to strengthen their national alliance. Suga also congratulated Biden on his victory in the election.
Kyodo reported that Suga also emphasized his hope that the US could help create a free and open Indo-Pacific condition.
“This alliance is important amid increasingly difficult security conditions around Japan,
and of course for the peace and welfare of the international community, “said Suga, as quoted by Kyodo.
In the brief 10-minute chat, Biden underlined his deep commitment to defend Japan and the US commitment under Article 5.
In particular, Biden named Senkaku as one of his priorities.
Article 5 contained in the clause of the Japan-US security agreement of 1960 obliged the US to respond to armed attacks in all areas under Japanese rule.
This became the basis for the deployment of about 55,000 US troops in various parts of Japan.
With regard to Senkaku, Japan and the US consider China as the main threat because until now they also claim Senkaku as their territory.
By China, the Senkaku Islands are referred to as the Diaoyu Islands.
China quite often sends their coast guard ships to the region and makes Japan feel threatened.
Senkaku, or Diaoyu, is a hotbed for the two Asian giants because it is surrounded by waters with very rich fishery potential.
Basically, it is called stored large oil and gas reserves.
He demonstrated Biden’s commitment to Article 5 when he was still serving as vice president in the Barack Obama era.
At that time the Obama administration firmly stated that the Senkaku would be under US protection under Article 5.
From the Japanese side, Suga has expressed his desire to forge closer ties with Biden who will soon become leader of Japan’s main security ally.
