NAM Summit in Azerbaijan: Mali validly represented by Minister of State Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga

At the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Azerbaijan, the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, presented the national prevention mechanism and the fight against Covid-19, and presented the investment provided by the Government of Mali in order to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic on the population.

This Thursday, March 2, 2023 was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on post-Covid 19 recovery. More than 70 countries and international organizations, including Mali, took part in this meeting, the objective of which is “to take stock of the pandemic, to assess the efforts made to deal with it, to discuss the Movement’s vision of the recovery post-pandemic and to salute the place of solidarity within borders and between States.

Representing the President of the Transition, Colonel Assimi Goïta, the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Government Spokesman, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, from the outset, congratulated the Azerbaijani authorities and reiterated Mali’s support for the Non-Aligned Movement.

Colonel Maïga presented the national mechanism for the prevention and fight against Covid-19, and exposed the investment provided by the Government, with a view to mitigating the consequences of the pandemic on the population in the socio-economic and financial field. This, in a context deeply marked by the fight against terrorist groups operating in Mali.

Previously, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilhem Aliyev, no less President of NAM since 2019, proposed that the headquarters of the Movement be established in his country. He also stressed “the need to reform the United Nations Security Council, which is now obsolete and ineffective, after insisting on respect for the sovereignty of States and denouncing the negative role of France in Africa”. .

Decisions taken

The summit was sanctioned by an outcome document entitled “Global call for action: supporting post-pandemic recovery in African countries”, in which the participants invited the international community to support the efforts of the said States to achieve the goals and aspirations contained in Agenda 2063.

The decisions taken relate to the creation of a Support Fund, which the Republic of Azerbaijan immediately endowed with an amount of one million dollars, as the first contributor.

Need we remind you that the Minister of State, Colonel Abdoulaye MAÏGA took the opportunity of this summit to conduct bilateral exchanges with many Heads of Delegation, in particular the Prime Minister of Algeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Gambia, the Minister of Health of Chad and the Deputy Minister of Cooperation of Burkina Faso.
