– That curve goes straight up. It seems to be approaching the figures we had a year ago, at the top of the first wave, if not very long, unless the trend reverses very quickly, says Nakstad to NRK Nyhetsmorgen.
He is particularly concerned about the development in Eastern Norway, which has had an increasing infection trend for several weeks and is approaching the situation that prevailed at the height of wave two – around New Year’s times.
In the last 24 hours, 640 new corona infections have been registered in Norway. 275 of the cases are registered in Oslo.

– More serious
– Several admissions probably indicate that these mutated variants actually cause more serious illness and more admissions. So what we have heard from other countries and read in research reports, that is also true in Norway now, says Nakstad.
In Norway, there were 200 corona patients admitted to hospital on Sunday. That was 23 more than the day before. 25 of the patients receive treatment in a respirator.
As many as 177 of the country’s 200 corona admissions are in Health South-East.
Despite increasing infection, Nakstad believes that Norway will see fewer deaths than before, because the oldest age group has been vaccinated.
– But the burden on the health service with the number of admissions, it also affects younger people. And then we talk about people in their 50s, 40s, and 30s, and also younger than that.
He also warns that younger people can also be affected by the long-term effects of the coronavirus, regardless of whether they become so ill that they end up in hospital or not.
