Kuala Lumpur –
Court Malaysia free former prime minister (PM) Najib Razak of one related corruption charge scandal 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). However, Najib will continue the 12-year prison sentence he received in another case against him.
As reported AFPFriday (3/3/2023), Malaysian High Court judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan stated in his ruling that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove the argument about Najib fabricating official audit reports 1MDB for personal gain.
In this case, Najib was charged together with former 1MDB head Arul Kanda Kandasamy. Just like Najib, Arul Kanda was also acquitted.
“The first defendant (Arul Kanda) was dismissed and acquitted of charges. The second accused (Najib) was aborted and acquitted of the charges against him,” said judge Mohamed Zaini’s decision on Friday (3/3) at the exact time.
The indictments acquitted of Najib focus on allegations that the former Malaysian prime minister used his position to order changes to a report on sovereign wealth fund 1MDB by the government’s official audit agency in February 2016.
The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison if the accused are found guilty.
According to the indictment, the changes were made to exonerate Najib from criminal responsibility. In that case, Najib was charged with assisting Arul Kanda, who was President and Chief Executive of 1MDB at the time.
