Najib Mikati on Extending Central Bank Governor’s Term, Economic Growth in Lebanon, and Resolving Maritime Border Issue

Najib Mikati, head of the Lebanese caretaker government, said that the issue of extending the governor of the Central Bank is not on the table and that there is a mechanism that will be taken to appoint a new governor before the end of this month.

This came in an exclusive interview within the #With_Giselle program.

Mikati added that he would not nominate any names for the position of governor of the Central Bank and would leave this task to the Minister of Finance after the country reached a time when the decision cannot be postponed.

Mikati said that despite the difficult conditions that Lebanon is going through, he is confident in the possibility of improving the situation, pointing out that Lebanon is achieving economic growth for the first time in years this year, but the greed of speculators plays a role in the deterioration of the price of the Lebanese pound and the improvement in economic conditions is not reflected in the exchange rate of the lira against the dollar. .

The Lebanese caretaker prime minister indicated that the success in resolving the issue of demarcating the maritime borders allows Lebanon to benefit from exploration operations in the regional waters, as there are three international companies that will undertake the exploration process in Lebanon’s southern waters.

Mikati added that the Taif Agreement is still the most appropriate for the situation in Lebanon, but it cannot be applied in a selective manner.

On the issue of refugees, Mikati appealed to international institutions to give incentives to refugees who return to their home countries so that this would motivate them to reduce pressure on refugee-receiving countries.
