Nairobi Water Project Tops Fan Voting at Xylem and City Football Foundation’s 2023 Water Heroes Academy

As global water challenges worsen, young leaders are stepping up to make a difference with the Water Heroes Academy – a joint initiative between Cityzens Giving, Manchester City’s global community program, and Xylem, the global water technology partner. Launched in 2021, the initiative empowers young leaders to address water challenges in their communities. They do this by using the potential of football to convey important information about water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

This year, five water projects led by inspiring young leaders in Bangalore, Barranquilla, Nairobi, Tacloban City and Washington DC participated in the program. Earlier this month, Manchester City fans were asked to vote for their favorite project, with almost 18,000 votes cast Nairobi named the winning project for 2023.

Today, an estimated 70% of Nairobi’s population lives in informal settlements, and only 20% of the population has access to piped water and sanitation.¹ The team’s project in Nairobi focused on educating young girls about using clean water for sanitation and hygiene during their periods.

The young leaders from Nairobi will be visited by a Manchester City club legend and will receive additional training from Manchester City coaches as part of the football and aquatic training curriculum. Each of this year’s projects will receive seed funding from Xylem and the City Football Foundation, educational tools, and the training and mentoring they need to develop their own unique programs.

Since 2021, the Water Heroes Academy has engaged more than 200 young leaders and provided important water and football information to more than 12,000 young people in ten cities.
