Website Editor: Today we are very excited to have two special guests, Nairo Quintana and Egan Bernal, both esteemed Colombian cyclists, with us on World-Today News. Firstly, congratulations on the successful “Gran Fondo de Ciclismo de Bogotá X Egan.” It’s wonderful to see so many people come together to enjoy cycling, both as professionals and amateurs.
Nairo Quintana, you raised some important concerns about the government’s budget cut for athletes during your recent speech. Can you explain more about this issue? Do you feel that the government is not giving enough support to athletes like yourself? And how do you think this might affect the future of cycling in Colombia?
Nairo Quintana: Thank you very much. Regarding the budget cut, it was a surprise for all of us. We didn’t expect it. The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has informed us that they would reduce our budget by 20%, which is quite a lot, especially considering the investment we have made in recent years to promote sports and cycling. This news worries us a lot, as we don’t understand why this decision was taken. We believe that sport has helped a lot in the development of our country, especially cycling. As I said, it’s a path of peace, unity and learning how to work together as a team.
Egan Bernal: I agree with Nairo. It’s unfortunate that the government has decided to cut the budget for athletes without any prior communication or explanation. As Nairo mentioned, we’ve seen great success in promoting sports and cycling in Colombia over the past few years. The country has produced some of the best cyclists in the world, including ourselves. Cutting our budget will undoubtedly affect our future and the development of the sport in Colombia.
Website Editor: What are some of the specific areas that you think might be affected by this budget cut? For example, do you think it could impact youth programs or equipment purchases?
Nairo Quintana: Absolutely. The youth programs are essential for the growth of cycling in Colombia. These programs provide kids with opportunities to engage in a healthy lifestyle, learn important life skills, and potentially become professional cyclists in the future. If we don’
