Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has a strategic role in implementing the Ministry of Health’s (Kemenkes) national action plan (RAN) program to eliminate cervical cancer in the 2030 national action plan. This was conveyed by the Bio Farma Halal Team Mahsun Muhammadi.
“Nahdlatul Ulama as the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia is actively participating in the success of RAN in eliminating cervical cancer by 2030 by 90% – 75% – 90%,” he said in the Halaqah Fiqh Civilization of the Bahtsul Masail Institute of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (LBM PBNU) at the Building PBNU Jakarta, Wednesday (27/12/2023).
It was explained that the cervical cancer elimination program promoted by the Ministry of Health adapted the 90% – 75% – 90% concept, slightly different from the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines which use the 90% – 70% – 90% concept. This concept targets 90 percent of cervical cancer vaccinations, 75 percent of screening, and 90 percent of treatment for cervical cancer sufferers.
“90 percent of women receive complete HPV vaccination at the age of 15 years. 75 percent of women receive cervical cancer screening (high performance HPV DNA) at the ages of 35 and 5 years. 90 percent of women with pre-cancerous lesions receive therapy,” explained Mahsun.
He explained that cervical cancer is a serious threat to the health of Indonesian women. With this program, it is hoped that it can reduce the death rate due to cervical cancer, which is currently ranked second after breast cancer.
“Cervical cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body, while the cervix is in the cervix,” he explained. More than 70 percent of cervical cancer cases, he continued, are caused by the HPV virus types 16-18. Transmission of this virus is not only through sexual contact, but can also occur non-sexually.
