A total of 119 students from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) and the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery (FKK) of Nahdlatul Ulama University, Surabaya (Unusa), took an active role in supporting the success of the SUB PIN Polio immunization program which was simultaneously implemented in East Java (Jatim), including in the city of Surabaya.
Information received suarasurabaya.net, This immunization with the Surabaya Health Service was carried out in response to the discovery of an Extraordinary Event (KLB) case of acute paralysis due to the polio virus. This activity was held simultaneously at several community health centers in Surabaya, starting January 15-17 2024.
Lailatul Khusnul Rizki, Midwifery Lecturer at FKK Unusa, revealed that as many as 63 FK students and 56 FKK Unusa students were involved in this effort as a positive contribution in helping the government prevent the increase in polio cases.
“We are happy to be involved in this contribution. The students are enthusiastically involved in efforts to provide immunization services for the community. “This joint effort with the Surabaya City Health Office aims to increase immunization coverage and create awareness of the importance of vaccination in preventing polio,” explained Riris, his nickname, Wednesday (17/1/2024).
The students involved are given the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real contexts, while interacting with the community directly.
“The assigned student delegations were spread across a total of seven health centers in several sub-districts in Surabaya. “SUB PIN Polio this time targets children aged 0-7 years to receive the polio vaccine,” said Riris.
For your information, polio mostly attacks children under five years old but can also attack children over five years old if their immunization history is incomplete.
For this reason, according to Riris, involving students from the health sector is a positive step in ensuring that health messages can be conveyed effectively to the public.
Meanwhile, Ari Wijayanti, a Unusa student who was involved in this immunization, said that the implementation of polio immunization was divided into four posts in each sub-district, namely at the community health center, posyandu, TK-PAUD, and elementary school.
“On the first day on the 15th, we were divided into four different posts, and on the first day it was implemented simultaneously throughout Surabaya. “So the first day is the busiest, on the second and third days it’s only left for small children who haven’t been immunized, and door-to-door implementation for those who don’t know the information,” explained the student majoring in D3 Nursing.
On the same occasion, Nabilla Fauziyah, a student majoring in D3 Nursing at Unusa, said that this was her first experience contributing to community immunization efforts. He also explained that giving this immunization is two drops per child.
“This is my first experience, I am excited and happy to be able to provide direct benefits in providing immunization to the community. “And this contribution has been a valuable learning experience for me,” said Nabilla when met at the Gayungan Health Center.
Through synergistic collaboration between the university and the Surabaya City Health Service, it is hoped that this activity can become a model for similar efforts in the future.
By continuing to support the immunization program, the people of Surabaya can work together to create a healthier environment free from the risk of polio. (bill/ipg)
