Nagorno-Karabakh: Armenia Not Ready For Peace Negotiations …

The United Nations Security Council unanimously called in a statement on Tuesday for an “ immediate end to fighting ” in Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pachinian thinks it is too early to negotiate the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with Azerbaijan.

The 15 members of the Security Council support ‘the call of the UN Secretary-General’ António Guterres. The warring parties are asked to “stop fighting immediately, ease tensions, and return to constructive negotiations.”

They “strongly condemn the use of force and deplore the loss of life among the civilian population,” the communication said.

Finally, the text also expresses ‘full support’ for a ‘central role of the Co-Chairs (US, Russia and France) of the Minsk group in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)’. The warring parties are urged to work closely with them for an ‘urgent resumption of dialogue without preconditions’.

The statement was adopted at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. The special session came at the request of Germany and France, with the support of Estonia, Belgium and Great Britain.

The conflict between the former Soviet republics has been going on for years. The Nagorno-Karabakh region is an enclave in Armenia that was part of the Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan in the Soviet Union. Armenia has long owned the region and the population is predominantly Armenian, but Azerbaijan has wanted the region back for decades. In the conflict, Azerbaijan is receiving support from Turkey.

The area split off in 1988, leading to a conflict in 1992-1994 that left 30,000 dead. It has been a fragile file since 1994. The current fighting is the deadliest revival of violence in recent years.
