Athlete Abdi Nageeye suffered a hamstring problem again during the New York marathon on Sunday. The complaints at the back of his thigh have been bothering him for years and remain a vulnerable part of his body. “It’s already the third time in a big marathon that my hamstring is my nightmare. This time it started to hurt after 3 kilometers,” the Olympic silver winner said on Instagram.
Nageeye went for the win in New York, but he finished fifth in 2:11.39, more than 3 minutes behind Kenyan Albert Korir, who won after a 10-kilometer solo in 2:08:22. “I’m not so much disappointed, but more sad. I’m grateful to run this wonderful marathon and happy that the big city marathons are back with so many people, but I do need to start discussing with my coaching team how I can alleviate my hamstring problems and remedy,” said the 32-year-old Dutch athlete of Somali descent.

Nageeye’s complaints date back to the spring of 2018, when he finished seventh in a freezing wet Boston marathon. He suffered a tear in his left hamstring during that race, but continued to run. Since then, the muscle complaints have been playing up in almost every game. He also suffered from his hamstring in Sapporo, Japan, where he quite sensationally captured silver in the Olympic marathon in August. Twice then Nageeye felt a twinge of pain. “That was at the beginning of the game, but luckily it was over after that,” he said at the time.
