Ukraine can get through the heating season without Russian gas with the available quantities in underground gas storages, said Naftogaz Ukraine Deputy Director Yury Vitrenko.
“We note that we do not receive a single cubic meter of Russian gas, while we saw that the temperatures were low… That is, under certain conditions, we can provide all consumers in Ukraine with a sufficient volume of gas and without Russia,” Vitrenko told Gromadske TV “.
He also said that Kiev could receive from Europe about 20 billion cubic meters per year, which exceeds the total import needs. “That’s why I say that, in principle, we can get gas from Europe. The only thing we have to keep in mind is that interruptions in gas supplies from Europe are possible – these are certain or extreme situations, as well as peak loads… But these are extreme situations,” Vitrenko said.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk previously said that Ukraine will not buy gas from Russia at the proposed price of $212 per thousand cubic meters, as it is cheaper in Europe — $200.
Previously, the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, Alexander Novak, told RIA Novosti that Ukraine will not be able to fully cover its gas needs from underground storage in the winter and will be forced to buy additional quantities, and the reason for the refusal to purchase gas from the Russian Federation is the lack of funds for this purpose.
According to the data of the operator of the gas transmission network “Ukrtransgaz”, as of January 13, the balance of blue fuel in the Ukrainian gas stations is 12.5 billion cubic meters.
