This project, which is implemented within the framework of the “Research-Innovation” program of the NSRF, is the result of cooperation between the National Technical University of Athens and is an initiative that brings Greece to the vanguard of environmental innovation in the European Union.
The philosophy of the system is based on the fundamental principle “Polluter Pays Principle – PPP”, which is one of the main guidelines of the EU’s environmental policy. This principle dictates that those responsible for the production of pollution, whether for individuals or businesses, they must bear the cost of the pollution they cause. This includes both prevention and control measures, as well as environmental restoration measures. The aim is to shift the burden of pollution costs from taxpayers to polluters, while offering incentives to avoid environmental damage.
The OSADA, implemented as a pilot in the Municipality of Nafplion, offers an integrated framework for remunerative waste management. Through this system, citizens and businesses that produce more waste will be required to pay higher fees, while more environmentally responsible practices will be rewarded. The principle of reciprocity acts as a tool to encourage recycling and waste reduction, contributing to better resource management and environmental protection.
The implementation of the specific system in the Municipality of Nafplion comes to strengthen the environmental initiatives of the local government, while it is an important step in the direction of sustainable development. The Municipality, through its active participation in this project, aspires to form a more responsible model of waste management, which will contribute both to the improvement of the quality of life of the residents and to the protection of the natural environment of the area.
The “Research-Innovate” program, under which OSADA is financed, is one of the most important research and development programs of the European Union, which aims to promote research, innovation and technological development. The cooperation of the Municipality of Nafplio with leading institutions such as the National Technical University of Athens and UniSystems confirms the commitment of the local government to implement the best practices for environmental management, and to make the municipality an example to be followed by other regions of the country.
This system, although a pioneer in Greece, is part of a wider trend across the EU to strengthen environmental responsibility, and is expected to play a key role in shaping a greener and more sustainable Europe. With its gradual implementation and improvement, OSADA can become a model for the rest of the country, offering significant environmental and economic benefits both to local communities and to the wider society.
