Nafi Thiam may be a two-time Olympic heptathlon champion, but she still has to qualify for Paris.
Since the European Championships in August 2022, Nafi Thiam (29) has now completed a full heptathlon. Since the qualification period for the upcoming Olympic Games runs from December 31 of that year, she must take action again before Paris to collect the necessary points. Her title and record in the pentathlon at the European Indoor Championships in March 2023 are not sufficient for qualification.
Her entourage made it clear this afternoon that Thiam, who is currently training in South Africa, was chosen for the European Championship in Rome. There she hopes to meet the Olympic minimum at the beginning of June. As the defending champion, she has a wild card for that European Championship, but nothing can go wrong in Italy, because the Games start at the end of July.
“The training is going well,” it sounds, “and Nafi is looking forward to competing at a high level and at the same time securing her Olympic ticket. After Rome she will compete in individual events before heading to the Games.”
It had previously become clear that Thiam would not participate in the indoor season. The Olympic champion wants to be at her best at the Olympic Games in Paris, but the World Indoor Championships this weekend in Glasgow does not fit in with that preparation.
