A massive crash in the BinckBank Tour claimed many victims. Oliver Naesen (AG2R) could also no longer avoid a tumble. Our compatriot kept his right foot in his click pedal, while riders fell on him.
Research has shown that Naesen has a bad bruise on his knee. Tomorrow morning, the team doctor will take the plunge or Naesen can go off the starting podium in the time trial.
Jenthe Biermans, who normally had to kick off the time trial in Vlissingen, will not start again. The Israel Start-Up Nation rider has not suffered any fractures, but still needs time to recover.
The consequences are even heavier for Stijn Steels. The Deceuninck-Quick Step rider has broken a bone in his wrist joint and has to go under the knife. His season therefore comes to an abrupt end.
“I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. I felt good and I wanted to help the team,” said Steels. “I was really looking forward to my first classics with Deceuninck-Quick Step, so I’m really unhappy.”
