Nadal has not won a trophy at the Australian Open since 2009. This is Nadal’s 13th appearance in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Roger Federer (15) and John Newcomb (140) have previously achieved this feat.
This is Nadal’s 43rd Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance of his career. Nadal has clashed with Fognini, 33, 16 times so far. Nadal has won 12 of them.
