“Ñachi”, a play that investigates miscegenation, premieres at Teatro del Puente
Exploring the conflict that exists between Western culture and the ancient cultures of the American continent is one of the starting points of “Ñachi”, a work by the company Teatro del Amor that will have its debut at Teatro del Puente.
A sheep is born in the south of Chile, on the day of the winter solstice, near Lumaco. During the four seasons of a year, it grows in the field of a family that cares for and feeds it. Little by little she gets to know the environment that surrounds her; their worldview, their rites, their daily life and the political violence that affects their territory.
“The concepts that move this work are mainly the cycles of nature, such as birth, life and death, the seasons of the year and the rites associated with animal sacrifices. In addition, the condition of the mestizo is fundamental for us”explains the playwright and director of the play, Nicolás Bascuñán.
The proposal seeks to stress the conflict between Western culture and the ancestral cultures of the American continent. And from its staging, to investigate the scenic devices, as shock forces that problematize with the fiction proposed by the dramaturgy.
“Our work does not try to be a voice of the Mapuche nation, for this reason, rather than an investigation and exploration of their worldview, it is a search for the experience that we live as mestizos when relating to a culture that we feel close to and distant at the same timeadds Bascuñán.
“Ñachi” was part of the program for the development of theatrical works, Cimientos, appearing in the Series of Staged Readings in ITI Theater, New York in June of this year. The bilingual festival showcased contemporary works from seven countries, developed in a year-long incubator under the patronage of IATI Theatre.
“As the playwright of the play, being able to be part of the Cimientos 2022 residency at the IATI Theater was a very powerful and nutritious experience, since it gave the text the chance to be read and analyzed by ten other playwrights from different parts of the world such as the United States, Spain, Colombia, Argentina or Kenya. That previous work of analysis, served to a great extent for the work to reach its final form, and ended up giving it more specific and interesting characteristics”complements the director.
