Here we are, that time of year finally begins: the last days of October until the beginning of November, if necessary, to declare who will be Major League Baseball championor as they say, world champion.
This edition of World Series is the most anticipated of recent years: competing are the two most iconic teams, whose brands are recognizable all over the world, the New York Yankees on the one hand Los Angeles Dodgers on the other. One of the best rivalries in baseball: they competed in the Fall Classic 11 times (12 with this one), with 8 victories for the Bronx Bombers and 3 for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the 40s-50s it was more than a rivalryin these parts it would be like a derby: the Yankees represented and still represent the Bronx, while the Dodgers represented Brooklyn, at Ebbets Field. Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle on one side, Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and Roy Campanella on the other.
In 2024 there will be the two MVPs of 2024 to challenge: Aaron Judge for the Yankeesauthor of 58 home runs and Shohei Ohtani per i Dodgersthe only one in MLB history with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season. The two best players of this generation in an unmissable challenge, where at least one of the two will wear his first ring on his finger.
Then there is Juan Sotowho arrived in the Bronx from the San Diego Padres with an offseason trade: the player with the highest OBP in the entire league, someone who gets on base practically all the timeone of the best plate disciplines in history. In fourth place in the lineup is a rediscovered Giancarlo Stantonwho in recent years only made headlines with his injuries, but in this Postseason (5 total home runs) he is back to what he was at the Miami Marlins, an MVP with 52 home runs in the regular season.
The Californian side responds with Mookie Bettsone of the best players of the last 10 years, world champion with both the Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox, who are even bigger rivals than the Yankees, and will be a very personal duel per Mookie.
There is one challenge within the challenge even among managerswhich concerns the rivalry between the Yankees and the Red Sox: Aaron Boonemanager of the New Yorkers, hit that walk-off home run in Game 7 of the Championship Series against Boston to lead the Yankees to the 2003 World Series; Dave Robertsmanager of the Los Angeles, stole second base in Game 4 of the Championship Series the following year, starting the incredible comeback of the Red Sox from 0-3 to 4-3 against New York, and then winning the first World Series after 86 years.
In short, there are many stories that can tell the 2024 edition of the World Series. The teams with the best record in the league got there and both played a postseason at very high levels: the Dodgers scored 36 runs in 6 games of the NLCS against the Mets and twice pitched a shutout (they didn’t concede any runs). The Yankees have only lost two games in the entire postseasonone against the Royals and the other against the Guardians, also thanks to the magic of Giancarlo Stanton, author of 5 home runs in the Postseason.
Insiders talk about “World Series of the Century” and the predictions are various, where there is no real favourite. They are the two franchises with the most fans in all of America, but they are also the most hated of all. And that’s why it will be a guaranteed spectacle.
Additionally, the Los Angeles Dodgers will wear a sticker on their uniform sleeves with the number 34 inside a blue heart to remember the great Mexican pitcher Fernando ValenzuelaCY Young and World Series winner in 1981, passed away on Tuesday, October 22 at the age of 63.
