N-VA wants a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour for cyclists on the cycle path in built-up areas. This is what Flemish Member of Parliament Marius Meremans says in the run-up to the Mobility Committee in parliament.
“On cycle paths in our village and city centers you increasingly see conflicts between different users,” says Meremans. “Students who cycle to school quietly, people with speed pedelecs who want to get to work quickly, cycling tourists, etc. This increases the risk of accidents quickly. Clear rules can prevent those accidents.”
That is why Meremans asks to limit the speed on bicycle paths in built-up areas to 30 kilometers per hour. “More cyclists in the same space means a greater chance of conflicts and accidents due to large speed differences. However, speed pedelecs can often easily limit their speed with the bicycle computer. I therefore ask the Minister of Mobility, Lydia Peeters, to discuss this proposal at the interministerial conference in order, if necessary, to road code.”
Speed pedelecs should still be allowed to go faster, but on the roadway.
