An innocent proposal for a resolution by N-VA Member of Parliament Peter Buysrogge provoked a community riot in the Parliamentary Defense Committee on Wednesday morning. The fact that the North Sea ports are referred to as “Flemish” in the resolution angered the PS and MR MPs present.
On Wednesday morning, a proposal for a resolution from N-VA Member of Parliament Peter Buysrogge was discussed in the Defense Parliamentary Committee. In it he argues for additional protection by Defense of critical underwater infrastructure and the North Sea ports.
Buysrogge introduced his proposal, without a community slant, but PS Member of Parliament Christophe Lacroix reacted as if stung by a wasp. He described the proposal as “flamingant”, but according to Buysrogge that was by no means the spirit of the resolution. “His reaction was loose about it and shows a lack of substantive arguments,” he responds.
In the 12-page resolution, the word ‘Flemish’ is used exactly once, more specifically to indicate the North Sea ports. That was enough for Lacroix to take offense at the resolution.

Buysrogge has advised his PS colleague to reread the proposal, so that further discussions can proceed in a more serene manner. When asked whether the terminology used will be changed, Buysrogge replies that there are no elements to take offense to.
“We want to work on the core of the problem, which is the presence of Russian submarines in the North Sea. We want to ensure that our own port infrastructure is secured,” he concludes. “That’s the spirit of my resolution, not to beat the big community drum.”
