N-VA does not want children of IS mothers with grandparents | Inland

N-VA wants children who are repatriated from Syria not to be automatically taken care of by the grandparents. That is what Flemish MP Nadia Sminate said in the plenary session. According to Welfare Minister Hilde Crevits (CD&V), that decision belongs to the juvenile judge.

Six more women and 16 children were repatriated from Syria this week. These are minors who, given their environment, were at risk of radicalization. According to the federal government, it is therefore safer to receive them here.

The six women are immediately sent to prison because of their ties to IS. In most cases the children go to the grandparents, but Sminate does not always think that is a good idea. “It’s in some of those family contexts that the parents have been radicalized,” she said. “I think it’s foolish to just take those children in there.” The MP wants Flanders, which is responsible for the reception, to look for alternatives.

“It is the juvenile judge who decides where the children will be placed and what guidance they need,” Crevits said. “I understand you’re wondering if it’s wise to place them with the grandparents, but I’m not going to take the place of the judge.”
