Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès (MR) received a barrage of questions about the decisions of the Security Council in The Chamber on Thursday. But there was also very different criticism of the prime minister: her language errors when she communicates in Dutch. Member of Parliament and Mayor of Aalst Christoph D’Haese (N-VA) is annoyed that Wilmès is not talking about ‘a’ virus or ‘the’ virus, but invariably says ‘the’ virus. “What language hygiene in your communication would do wonders”, they say.

Wilmès reacted laconically to the criticism and wondered out loud why the biggest concern now is language errors. “Instead of talking about the seriousness of the situation,” said the prime minister. “It is not serious, as we say in French. ”
The bilingual Raoul Hedebouw (PVDA-PTB) was also not pleased with the criticism of the N-VA member of parliament and made this clear when he spoke. “What does it matter what language it is in,” he fulminated. “If one thing is clear about this virus, it is that everyone in Europe and the world is affected.”
