Myths Make People Avoid Vaccination

Jakarta: A pediatrician from the Parent Care Foundation, Windhi Kresnawati, corrects a number of false information about vaccines virus. Vaccine disinformation causes people to refuse to undergo vaccination even though it is important for health.

“There are many myths that discourage people from undergoing vaccination,” said Windhi in a written statement, Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

Windhi mentioned the first myth, namely infectious diseases can be avoided with a healthy lifestyle. He said that a healthy lifestyle is indeed good but it is not enough to win certain infections.

Windi gave an example of the appearance of the measles vaccine in the United States (US) in 1963. The disease gradually disappeared until in 1974 the US was declared free from measles.

“The patterns and lifestyles of US citizens have not changed during that time. This means that the biggest role in the loss of measles is immunization, not merely a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

The second myth, namely children who remain sick even though they have been vaccinated. Windhi said that when they are sick, the severity of vaccinated children is relatively lighter than those who have not been vaccinated.

“Children who are immunized when they are sick will be spared from disability to death,” said Windhi.

Windhi clears the next myth that vaccines contain dangerous substances. He explained that vaccines that are mass produced must meet the main requirements, namely safe, effective, stable and efficient.

The Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) will immediately withdraw the vaccine if it has side effects. Usually, side effects are detected in the early phase before they are mass produced.

Windhi also confirmed the myth about vaccines that cause autism. He said there was no relationship between the content of the thimerosal vaccine against autism in children. Thimerosal was accused of being a trigger for children’s autism.

“The US has removed thimerosal in 1999. But the fact is, after thimerosal was abolished, the autism rate in the US did not go down, meaning there is no correlation,” he said.
