UNITED STATES – The affair is worthy of a film. New York police arrested several people on Monday January 8 after the discovery of a secret tunnel under a synagogue in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. As workers were about to seal the tunnel, a group of young Orthodox Jews stopped them, forcing the NYPD to intervene.

The story begins in December. A neighbor of the synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway, headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in New York, claimed to have heard suspicious noises at night from his home, as reported by the local news site Crown Heights Info at the time. Workers carrying out plumbing work in the area then discovered that a tunnel had been dug under the synagogue, connecting it to another building.

Following these revelations, the “gabbai”, in charge of the synagogue, ordered that this clandestine tunnel, threatening the foundations of the building, be condemned. On the afternoon of January 8, a cement truck and a team of masons went to the site.

But the members of the movement who had built the tunnel got in their way, even tearing off the wooden cladding of the synagogue as a sign of protest, as you can see in our video at the top of the article. Some then entered the tunnel and refused to come out, despite orders from the police and their rabbi.

Around 7 p.m. local time, a fight broke out inside the synagogue leading to the arrest of around ten people by the NYPD. According to videos shared on social media, the tunnel has since been sealed. The synagogue is closed until further notice.

In a statement released on January 9, Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky said he “pained by the acts of vandalism by a group of young agitators who damaged the synagogue” and assured that these “heinous acts” will be investigated. He also thanked the NYPD for their intervention.

The reason why the monks would have dug this underground passage remains unclear. According to Crown Heights Info, they started digging it six months ago to “enlarge” the synagogue. Since the riot, videos of the secret tunnel have circulated at high speed on social networks, often accompanied by delusional rumors and sometimes, anti-Semitic comments.

In one of these videos, we see an Orthodox Jew escaping from the tunnel through a “secret exit”, which looks like a manhole opening onto the street.
