Merdeka.com – Using seismic data from the earthquake obtained using NASA’s InSight lander published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists have found that the center of the planet Mars contains a mixture of liquid iron with large amounts of sulfur and oxygen mixed in.
Unlike Earth’s core which is liquid on the outside and solid on the inside, Mars’ core appears to be liquid throughout. Mars also has a high proportion of lighter elements that mix through their planet’s inner core.
The way earthquakes pass through and reflect off certain materials has helped scientists to produce maps of planets like Mars.
By monitoring these quakes, including one of the big ones in 2021 and a meteorite impact, Jessica Irving of the University of Bristol in England was able to solve the puzzle of what Mars’ core is made of.
Irving explained that this research was a major undertaking, involving advanced seismological techniques that had been honed on Earth. This research also simulates how the planet’s interior changes over time.
“But the work paid off, and we now know a lot more about what’s going on inside the Martian core,” Irving said as quoted by Indy100, Thursday (4/5).
This research has succeeded in making scientists more optimistic to peek further about Mars and all its mysteries.
