Lost Months: A Teen Warrior’s Triumph Over an Unknown Illness
Twenty-two-year-old Kim Blom walks confidently today, but a glance into her past reveals a devastating battle against an invisible enemy. This wasn’t a typical teenage struggle;
Kim’s body waged war against itself, leaving behind a heartbreaking trail of weight loss, physical pain, and emotional turmoil.
Kim remembers it began when she was 14, a gradual fading away. “I started losing weight, but my mom thought it was possibly hormones at first. It only got worse.” Despite seeing their family doctor and then a dietician, there were no answers.
Two years later, just weeks before her final exams, she was stuck in a chilling scenario.
"My heart rate was dangerously low." Kim recalls, "I was in shock. I didn’t get it, though. I had been running just two days before. At 16, I didn’t understand how someone could be this sick while feeling okay.”
Forced into a hospital stay, Kim’s weight dropped drastically. Although facing a harrowing reality, her focus remained laser-sharp—her exams.
"I remember standing on my desk one morning, having ripped out all my IV lines. I had this intense drive to succeed. " She chuckles, "I guess I was in denial."
After being discharged, doctors recommended further treatment, but Kim’s health deteriorated even more. "I tried. I really did. But I just wasn’t getting better.” Frustrated and desperate, Kim, despite her fragile health, chose to take her exams. With the pressure finally lifted, a new normal set in—one marked by severe anxiety, obsessive rituals, and debilitating fear.
Kim’s illness, though nameless, manifested as an obsession with perfection and a debilitating fear.
"It was like an addiction. If something wasn’t perfect, I’d break down and start again.
I even stopped swallowing properly due to stress."
Her world shrunk, consumed by her fight. Yet, through the darkness, a beacon of hope appeared – an equine companion.
"My horse helped me through it all. It gave me a reason to get up when I couldn’t see any other reason."
At her lowest point, her weight plummeting to a terrifying 29 kilos, Kim’s life hung in the balance.
“The doctors told my parents to say goodbye, “ she remembers, her voice catching. Suddenly, she woke feeling a surge of energy, an internal alarm
triggered by some unknown force.
Doctors were baffled.
Kim’s vital signs stabilized. After a mandatory stay in a center for eating disorders, which she initially resistedkuat combatting a battle she didn’t understand,
Kim started to heal.
Slowly, with the rise and fall of her struggles, Kim learned to combat not only her physical affliction but also the entrenched fear and obsessive-compulsive thoughts.
Today, although her condition remains undiagnosed, Kim’s resilience prevails.
"I had to hit rock bottom to climb back up,"
Kim says, a smile illuminating her face. Now, she faces life head-on.
"I went to Mallorca for six weeks to sell tickets," she beams, recounting her summer job bouncing at a bar. "I could never have dreamed that was possible a few years ago."
"Whatever happens, nothing can break me now," proclaims Kim, a testament to her spirit that even a strange
and silent body could not extinguish.
