Mysterious virus: scientists have not answered the main questions about covid in a year

More than a year has passed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the mystery of COVID has not yet been solved, the journalists of the Swiss newspaper write. Time Fabienne Goubet, Sylvia Lojean and Pascaline Mine.

So, it is still not known how the epidemic actually began. It is generally accepted that SARS-CoV-2 originated in bats in China. However, the virus had to pass through another species before starting to infect people – the search for this “intermediate host” has not yet been crowned with success, its genome has not been sequenced, which means that the question of the origin of covids remains unresolved. It is also possible that the virus accidentally escaped from the laboratory, but there is no evidence of this version either.

Among other mysteries is the transmission of the virus: it is still not clear exactly how it occurs. It is not known how long immunity lasts or what the actual mortality rate is. It is not yet clear what drugs to treat covid with, and why some cases of the disease are serious, while others are harmless. Virus mutations are also shrouded in secrets.

Another mystery is children, for whom the virus is believed to be less dangerous, but it is still unknown what the real contribution of children to the transmission of the disease in society. It is equally interesting whether pets are infected with the virus.

Finally, key questions remain unanswered – how and when the epidemic will end, whether the virus will be seasonal, whether the number of cases will decrease in the near future, whether vaccination will be effective – scientists are not yet able to answer all these questions.

According to the latest data, there are already more than 102 million people infected with COVID in the world, over 2.2 million people have died.
