Mysterious Pneumonia Cases in China, United States, and England – Latest News and Updates

KOMPAS.com – The United States and England reported the discovery of cases of mysterious pneumonia like those reported and which have spread in China.

Previously, mysterious pneumonia cases were reported to have flooded pediatric wards in Chinese hospitals. At least 7,000 patients are treated every day.

China’s Ministry of Health stated that this respiratory disease is not new and is known to everyone.

Acting Director of WHO’s Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention Maria Van Kerkhove said the increase in cases among Chinese children is thought to be linked to the full lifting of Covid-19 restrictions for the first time.

Now, after reports of mysterious pneumonia in China, the United States and England also reported cases of mysterious pneumonia.

1. United States

Quoted from the Independent, in the Ohio region as of August 2023, there have been 145 reported cases of childhood pneumonia.

On Tuesday (28/11/2023), the Heath District of Warren County, Ohio, said that this disease was considered an epidemic because the number of cases was above the average in Ohio.

Officials said the cases spreading in Ohio were caused by several types of pathogens, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a pathogen that causes pneumonia which is widely spread in China and Denmark.

Other pathogens found besides Mycoplasma were Streptococcus pneumoniae and adenovirus.

It is known that the average person affected by this disease is eight years old.

Cases are currently spread across several districts, but it is not yet known what the general pattern of children diagnosed with pneumonia is.

Officials also say that these illnesses are not unusual.

Additionally no deaths have been recorded in connection with this outbreak.

“The reported increase in pneumonia cases is not suspected to be a new respiratory virus, but rather a large increase in the number of pediatric pneumonia cases in general,” they said.

Although they say there has been a large increase in childhood pneumonia cases in Ohio, officials say this is not unusual because respiratory illnesses do spread in the winter.

2. England

Meanwhile, quoted from The Sun, at least 49 children in Wales, England were affected by respiratory infections due to mycoplasma pneumonia from April to September 2023.

The Wales Health Service (PHW) said that this spike in cases was the largest reported since 2020.

“In common with many other countries, Wales has seen an increase in the number of Mycoplasma pneumoniae reports this year compared to the period between 2020 and 2022,” a PHW spokesperson said.

Although the cause of this disease is not yet clear, cases are still being monitored.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said earlier this week it was closely monitoring the situation.

UKHSA Chief Executive Professor Dame Jenny Harries said the situation must continue to be monitored.

“UKHSA is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to work with international partners to assess emerging information as it becomes available,” he said.
