A Reddit user is seeking the community’s help to identify an object he photographed at Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport.

Frankfurt – Frankfurt Airport is not only Germany’s largest airport, but also a hub for European and international air traffic. Millions of passengers have to find their way around the two terminals every year: from baggage drop-off to the security check and then to the gate – and vice versa for those who have just arrived in the Main metropolis.

With most scanners and machines, the experienced traveler knows immediately what function is being fulfilled. But sometimes it only becomes clear on second glance – or not at all. That is what happened to an international passenger. But he did not want to leave the airport without knowing, so he photographed the questionable object and uploaded it to the Internet platform Reddit up. “What is that?” he asked in English. He was at Terminal 1 and had seen a cordoned off area in the middle of the airport hall three times. “It looks like a lift that can bring things up from below. For example, a beer barrel for the restaurants.”

The user took two photos. You can see a closed hatch in the ground, which is surrounded by a metal railing and has passages on two sides. The second photo also shows a sign that says “Fire brigade access route”.

A user quickly joins the discussion, saying that at the airport Frankfurt to work and therefore know the solution. “This is an emergency exit,” he writes. The baggage drop-off and baggage claim distribution system would be located underneath. Another user goes into more detail and explains the sign: “This is an escape route for fire fighting. It is intended to enable firefighters to reach the fire – in contrast to escape routes that enable people to flee from the fire.”

A third user finally explains the function of the magnet on the small column that can be seen in the photo. This keeps the hatch open, but can be closed again immediately and from a distance if the flames spread uncontrollably. This prevents the fire from spreading to the floor below. (csa)
