SAS now believes they have found the reason why the departure from Málaga to Stockholm on the night of Sunday had to cancel the flight and land in Copenhagen, after passengers and crew members suddenly started feeling ill.
– One theory is that drops of the de-icing liquid have entered the ventilation system, and that this has led to some of the crew and some of the passengers becoming unwell, writes Irena Busic, press manager at SAS Sweden, to Dagbladet.
Poisonous gas detected in the cabin and cockpit of Norwegian aircraft
In a jet aircraft, the engines are part of the system that supplies the cabin with breathable air. A leak in the system can therefore cause chemicals to pollute the air.

Busic emphasizes that the incident is still under investigation, and that the airline has not finally concluded a cause yet. She first spoke to The evening paper on the deicing fluid theory.
– The fingers turned blue
Passenger Noora Friberg has told the same newspaper that her fingers turned blue, and at the same time it became difficult to breathe.
– The staff picked me up, and then I got to sit with them at the very front of the plane. I got oxygen there. I was shaking a lot and couldn’t sit still. It was as if the brain was disconnected from the body, she said.

The plane in question is still in Copenhagen, where it is being examined. Busic says that Danish health personnel received those on board who needed help shortly after landing.
– No one needed to be taken to hospital for further treatment. I have been informed that the three members of the crew who fell ill during the flight were healthy again the next morning and could work as usual, says the press manager.
Smell of smoke
The aircraft in question is a Airbus 320. It was also the case on 5 November, when an SAS flight on the same route had to land in Brussels after smelling smoke in the cabin, according to AviationSource News. However, it was not the same plane.

When asked if SAS believes the same reason is behind both incidents, the response from press manager Busic is:
– We are still investigating the incident on 30 December, so it is difficult to answer the question.
She emphasizes that in both cases it was about one safety landing and not an emergency landing. Safety landing is used as a precautionary measure in cases where there is not an immediate or acute emergency.
Flight ruined by fart
The A320 is a very widespread aircraft type, and is the European Airbus’ counterpart to the American one Boeings 737 model. SAS disposes of both aircraft types.
– Will these events have consequences for SAS’ use of A320 machines?
– I currently have no information about that, replies press manager Busic.
