Hitekno.com – Found mysterious hole from Saudi Arabia which turned out to contain a pile human bones and animals in one place.
According to researchers, the mysterious hole is a system of lava channels beneath the Harrat Khaybar volcanic field.
Called Umm Jirsan, the hole stretches for 1.5 kilometers and makes it the longest lava tube found in Arabia.
In a new study, researchers found hundreds of thousands of bones belonging to at least 14 different types of animals, such as cows, horses, camels and mice. Among them were also found human bones.
“These lava tubes are jam-packed with hundreds of thousands of preserved animal remains. However, the exact reason why the bones are here is unknown,” said Mathew Stewart of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, quoted from Science Alert, Tuesday (17/8/2021).
However, experts think this assemblage of bones was most likely collected by the striped hyena, whose skeletal remains were also found in the pit, along with the animal’s fossilized dung.
“These creatures are avid bone gatherers. They transport it to the nest for consumption or storage, “added Stewart.
These skeletons at Umm Jirsan have accumulated over the last 7,000 years, proving excellent conditions for the preservation of bones in the lava tubes.
Although it is possible that other animals collect bones, such as foxes or wolves, the calculation of the animal’s weight is more towards hyenas.
In addition, numerous marks on the bones indicate hyenas gnawing at their victims.
Regarding the discovery of human bones, experts are still unable to explain it.
While much is still unknown about Umm Jirsan, the researchers hope this monstrous hole can serve as a time capsule to shed light on the paleoecology and prehistory of ancient Arabia.
