Mysterious Hepatitis Has Entered Indonesia, Caused by Dogs?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Ministry of Health reported that there were 15 cases of suspected mysterious hepatitis in Indonesia as of Monday (9/5/2022). The origins of this deadly disease are not known with certainty, but a number of experts in the UK have started research to investigate the link between the mysterious hepatitis and dogs.

The UK Health Safety Board (UKHSA), as quoted by Sky News, found that many of the patients came from families who owned dogs or had exposure to dogs. As many as 64 of the 92 available data also indicate there is exposure to these pets.

“This finding is being explored,” the UKHSA said, adding that it could have been a coincidence as “possession of a pet dog is common in the UK.”

The symptoms commonly found in patients with mysterious hepatitis in the UK are jaundice and vomiting. Most of those infected are children.

UKHSA said that a common virus called adenovirus may be the culprit behind the spike in hepatitis cases. Adenovirus was the most frequently detected virus in the tested samples.

However, cases of hepatitis after adenovirus infection in previously healthy children are actually very rare. Because of this, investigations are continuing into other factors that might be contributing, including previous COVID infection or changes to the adenovirus genome itself.

“The association with adenovirus is still being investigated in formal epidemiological studies.”
