Mysterious Hazy Galaxy Captured by Hubble Space Telescope

KOMPAS.com – A galaxy that appears hazy to be covered in fog was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.

This galaxy is located between the elliptical and spiral galaxies, which makes it appear hazy like a ghost, reported from the official website of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Tuesday (15/8/2023).

This galaxy is the lenticular galaxy NGC 6684. A lenticular galaxy is a galaxy whose shape resembles a lens.

Sophisticated sky survey cameras attached to the Hubble telescope capture the galaxy in a very dim light.

NASA explains, the location of the lenticular galaxy is about 44 million light years from Earth in the constellation Pavo.

Pavo is the Latin name of the peacock and it is one of the constellations in the southern sky. The constellation Pavo is also one of the four constellations known collectively as the Southern Birds.

The galaxy NGC 6684 has a large disk, but it is not as prominent as spiral galaxies, such as the Andromeda Galaxy.

Its shape is such that it sits between elliptical and spiral galaxies, which makes it appear ghostly as it appears to be shrouded in mist.

In addition, NASA said that the galaxy NGC 6684 also does not have a dark dust lane, which generally, in other galaxies, encircles the galaxy, making its spectral appearance appear more contrasting.

The data in this photo of lenticular galaxies captured by the Hubble telescope was taken in the Every Known Nearby Galaxy-themed census program of the universe. The program aims to observe entire galaxies within 32.6 million light years, which have never been explored by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Before the program started, the Hubble telescope had observed about 75 percent of nearby galaxies.

Through the census of galaxies conducted by the Hubble telescope, experts hope to obtain information about the stars that make up the various galaxies in various environments in the universe.
