The investigation into those who suffer from the symptoms of the disease is still ongoing, according to emails from Philip Goldberg, the American ambassador to Colombia, who The Wall Street Journal has seen. At least one family has left the country for treatment.
‘Unexplained incident’
The embassy staff received the first report of an ‘unexplained health incident’ in mid-September. At the beginning of this month, emails revealed that Havana syndrome had resurfaced and anyone with symptoms was urged to come forward.
Some members of the affected families in Bogotá initially thought they had altitude sickness, as the city is more than 2,600 meters above sea level, a diplomat told the American newspaper. During the investigation, some affected families live in hotels.

The Havana syndrome owes its name to the Cuban capital Havana, the place where the first reports came from at the end of 2016. Similar incidents followed in China, Austria, Germany, Serbia and the US itself. It is estimated that 200 US government employees have been affected.
Beeping sound
These people reported each time with similar health complaints, such as severe headache, nausea, fatigue, balance disorders and hearing a strange squeaking sound. The cause has never been determined in the five intervening years, although experts have suggested that it could be an attack with electromagnetic radiation or microwaves, such as in an espionage scandal that played out between 1953 and 1976, known as the ‘Moscow Signal’. ‘.
