JUNEAU – The research team was confused by the discovery mysterious object golden with a hole in it like an egg that hatched on the seabed off the coast of Alaska recently.
The shiny object, which felt as smooth as skin tissue to the touch, was discovered on the eighth day of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Seascape Alaska expedition.
Although experts have not confirmed the contents of this strange object, many suspect it may be an egg shell or the remains of a sea sponge.
“There is something trying to get in or out of this object. “This egg shell-like object was found at a depth of 3.2 kilometers,” said one NOAA researcher during the discovery which was also broadcast live online.
NOAA officials used remotely operated tongs to grab the object and remove it from the rocky area.
The object was then sucked into a tube before being taken to shore and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing in the laboratory is expected to reveal more information about its origins.
University of Plymouth Professor of Deep Marine Ecology, Kerry Howell, agrees that the object is very strange.
“In my 20 years of exploring the deep sea, I have never seen anything like this. I can’t wait to analyze the samples.
“There are still many species that have not been discovered in the deep sea so they can be linked to new species. “The hole could be a place for the creature to inhale and exhale if it is a sponge, or a place for the animal to hatch if it is an egg shell,” he said.
