As reported by AFP, Sunday (28/4/2024), Mount Erebus is the most active volcano in Antarctica located between two layers of glaciers.
Scientists estimate that Erebus consumes around 80 grams of gold per day, equivalent to USD 6,000.
Even though it is relatively small, this amount is very important and makes Erebus the only volcano in the world that emits gold in the form of pure metal.
The Erebus eruption that created gold is of particular interest to scientists. They continue to research the geological processes behind this unique phenomenon, with the hope of gaining a better understanding of the formation of gold in the earth and the possibilities for natural resources in the future.
This mountain has a height of 3,794 meters, which is popular among climbers and tourists.
About 80 grams of gold are spewed every day through exploding gas bubbles, and gold has been found up to about 900 kilometers from the volcano, according to Antarctic researchers.
Erebus is one of three volcanoes that make up Ross Island.
It is known that the volcano erupted in 1841 when Captain James Clask Ross was on a cruise that carried out magnetic studies in the Arctic and Antarctic.
