Two dead dogs were found in the woods near the Vinkstraat in Mill on Tuesday afternoon. A walker came across the shallow grave with her own dog and alerted the Brabant North-East animal ambulance. Spokeswoman Heidi Verhul speaks of a lurid find: “It is strange that they were wrapped in towels with a cuddly toy.”
It concerns two bitches. A beige poodle of about four kilograms. “He is missing the upper teeth, so he may have been to a vet for that,” Verhul explains. The other black dog is a garbage can breed weighing about ten pounds. The two most likely died and were buried at the same time.
When the employees of the animal ambulance arrived at the grave of the two dogs, they immediately smelled the corpse smell. “The dogs were already in a state of decomposition,” says Verhul. It is a remarkable grave, according to her, because the hole is a meter from the walkway and was only a foot deep.
“There is something loving about what we found in the grave.”
There are more strange things according to the employee of the animal ambulance. “The dogs were wrapped in two pink towels, one of which was definitely attached with a safety pin. We also found a toy rat in the grave. It shows something loving, you don’t do that if you just want to dump the dogs.”
Verhul does not want to immediately judge the find too harshly, despite the fact that it remains lurid and is not the way to say goodbye to your dogs. “Perhaps the owner was in financial trouble and they could no longer afford the costs of caring for the animals.” That certainly does not bode well for her, but Verhul suspects that there is a sad story behind this.
“Then do it right and dig a hole three feet deep.”
What remains strange is that the grave was very shallow and close to the walkway. “There was a bit of earth and moss over it and that was it. Then do it right and dig a hole a meter deep and also go deeper into the forest.” Verhul also finds it very strange that it concerns two dogs.
“They certainly don’t seem old and have been cared for and then they would have died at the same time? That’s very strange.” The animals are also not chipped. “That almost never happens again, but the chip is not registered, but these two have nothing at all.”
“Maybe they have been given a helping hand, although I hope not.”
She can only speculate about the cause of death. “Maybe they have been given a helping hand, although I hope not.” The animals have not been in the grave for long, according to Verhul. “Certainly not longer than a week, because with these temperatures it goes very fast and they are quickly unrecognizable. That is not yet the case.”
Verhul hopes that the police will investigate the dog grave, but is also looking for leads himself. “So if anyone recognizes the dogs or suddenly misses them, we would like to hear about it. Because effort has been made with those towels and that cuddly toy.”
