“The 36-year-old man who was driving the Ford car has been found, and the police have spoken to him. The exact circumstances of the incident will be clarified in the investigation,” Otomaars Virk, operational manager of the Southern Prefecture of the Estonian Police, told the newspaper.
The newspaper reports that the man was arrested in Terva.
The image from the video surveillance camera shows how on Wednesday at 6.08 a gray car drives past the sculpture from the side of Valga. Moments later, the same car, traveling from the opposite direction, crashes into a sculpture depicting Zelensky as part of the Statue of Liberty in New York.
The lower part of the sand sculpture was damaged, but the car’s front bumper and the side of the engine cover were damaged.
The 36-year-old Estonian citizen, who was driving a “Ford” car with a Finnish registration number, fled the scene.
Alcohol was found in the abandoned car, so the police assume that the driver might have been under the influence of alcohol.
Marianna Soka, the press representative of the municipality of Terva, said that it is planned to restore the sculpture in consultation with the author.
