Mysterious Cancellation: Air Koryo’s First Commercial Flight in 3 Years from Pyongyang to Beijing

National carrier North Korea (Jewelry), Air Koryo, is scheduled to make its first commercial flight in more than three years, since borders were closed due to the coronavirus (CoVD-19) pandemic. However, suddenly the flight was canceled for no apparent reason.

As reported AFPMonday (21/8/2023), North Korea closed most of its territory from the outside world since the beginning of 2020 when COVID-19 was rampant.

Air Koryo airline flight with number JS151 is scheduled to fly from Pyongyang on Monday (21/8) local time, and was supposed to land in Beijing, China, around 09.50 local time. Reporters were reported to have gathered at the Beijing airport to await the arrival of the North Korean airline’s plane.

However, almost two hours after the plane’s scheduled arrival, the nameplate at the airport terminal suddenly indicated the flight cancellation. That prompted complaints of dismay from journalists who had been waiting to see the first international travelers from North Korea after years of isolation.

Customer service at the Beijing airport told AFP that Air Koryo did not provide a reason for the cancellation of the flight.

AFP were unable to contact Air Koryo’s China office on Monday (21/8) local time, and a journalist who visited the airline’s Beijing office found the glass door locked and padlocked.

Air Koryo — North Korea’s national carrier — is expected to make its first commercial flight in three years.
