The inhabitants of Mariekerke (Bornem) can sleep soundly again. The cause of the mysterious beeping sound that has captivated them for months has most likely been found. It was a poorly adjusted gas boiler.

For months Mariekerke was captivated by a mysterious beep. At different times of the day, the noise spread across the village. “But that is probably a thing of the past now,” says Mayor Kristof Joos (N-VA). “When the noise hit the media en masse this week, an inspector recognized it. It was a poorly adjusted gas boiler.”
“When switching from lean to rich gas, the gas boiler had to be readjusted. But that hadn’t happened yet,” says Joos. “The owner was also not aware of any harm. Because the sound went out through the chimney and spread like that, he didn’t hear it himself. Now that we know that the beeping sound came from a gas boiler, this can also offer a solution for other places where beeps can also be heard.”

Because the mayor received reactions from far outside his municipality. “Not only from people who also hear beeps, but also from people who thought they recognized other things in it,” he says. “Some thought of a valve or a transmission tower, but there was even speculation about a tree frog or a special kind of owl. So the reality turns out to be less impressive.”
It remains to be seen whether the noise will effectively disappear, because it was previously thought that another faulty gas boiler was the cause. “I have asked the local residents to keep me informed. For now, they heard no more. Hopefully it will stay that way,” said Joos.
