In 2005, the redistribution of the criminal business between the various groups in Sofia has not yet been completed. The thugs are killing each other with terrifying consistency, none of them safe. The murders are mainly related to the redistribution of the drug market, but the bullets also catch one of the most brutal highway robbers. On May 11 in Sofia, in front of block 984 in the residential area “Lyulin” is the 29-year-old Ivaylo Rangelov, nicknamed Jinkata, who was killed. The shot man worked with crime heroes such as Sergey Georgiev – Rusnaka, Yanko Vatashki-Ludiya and Yordan Gizdov-Vola. Jinka leaves her home around 11 am. The place is convenient for shooting, the killer has been stalking him since morning in a car parked not far from the entrance.

There are people in front of the block, but none of them can later give a description of the killer. Shots are fired from the vehicle. One of the bullets hit Jinkata in the head and he fell to the ground.
In the first minutes, bystanders don’t even understand what happened. An hour after the attempt, the SDVR announced that the murdered man was a criminal, registered for dozens of thefts, robberies, extortion and rape.
Jinkata took the fear not only of the victims, but also of his “colleagues”. However, the real “glory” overtook him when the Ministry of Internal Affairs boasted that it had broken one of the most powerful highway gangs in Bulgaria. According to police statistics, from the end of 2000 to the beginning of 2002, at least a dozen highway robberies were committed on the main road Sofia – Kulata.
Among the injured are Greeks, Lithuanians, Poles, Germans and Slovaks. The most famous victim of the bandits is Iliya Kamchev – a trusted friend and in this case an envoy of the former Macedonian Prime Minister Lubcho Georgievski. Jinkata’s gang was famous for its particular cruelty. On January 6, 2002, shortly after the village of Usoyka in Dupnik, the luxury Mercedes CLK of the Greek family Diogenis Nikolaos and his wife Dimitro Leuta was hit by a dark-colored BMW, from which four masked men got out.
With pistols pointed, the robbers pulled the Greeks out of their car and took 40,000 drachmas, 750 dollars, half a kilogram of gold jewelry, two mobile phones and the personal documents of the spouses. About twenty kilometers from the scene of the robbery – to the village of Delyan in Pernish, the victims were dumped half-naked by the road, and the mutts disappeared with the two cars in an unknown direction.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs launched a massive search operation and Ivaylo Rangelov-Jinkata, considered the key figure in the criminal organization, was detained. However, he provides an alibi – he was in hospital during a series of highway robberies. However, the police continued to investigate and in the same year three doctors were detained in Dupnitsa for forging documents.

The doctors illegally entered the name of Rangelov in the journals of the hospital in Bobov dol, deleting the names of actual patients. One of the doctors also made up a false history of the disease. Upon his arrest, he attempted to dispose of $18,155 that had been given to him by Jinkata.
While Jinkata is behind bars, another of his gangster relationships is revealed – with Janko Vatashki – the Madman, to whom he gives his Mercedes to guard him until he is released from custody. The gang of highway robbers came to the attention of the police at the end of October 2001, when the former capital police officer Ivo Ivkov was detained at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing on his way to Turkey.

The handwriting is familiar – the car of the two Greeks was intercepted by the bandits’ car, and the victims were undressed and spent the night tied to two trees near the town of Boboshevo.
In those years, Bulgaria entered the black list of the European Union, foreigners passing through our territory bought maps on which the places on the roads where there is a high probability of being attacked and robbed were marked with skulls. Therefore, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor’s Office decided to put an end to the bad reputation. Although most of Jinkata’s gang members are in custody, they only spend a few months behind bars.
However, none of the criminologists noticed that shortly before they were attacked, absolutely all the victims of the highway robbers stopped at the inn in the village of Staro Selo to check if they were going in the right direction and to ask which was the shortest way to the Tower.
The bandits either had their own post at the roadside pub in question, or one of the staff worked for them as a scout and described to them on a mobile phone what the loot was and what kind of people were traveling in it. After Jinkata’s murder, forensic experts work on several versions, including a redistribution of power in the highway gang and revenge on victims. However, the murder remained unsolved and the robberies continued.

There are legends about Jinkata’s cruelty in the underworld. One of his crimes also caught the police. On January 31, 1998, he and his accomplices broke into the home of Marina and Vesco Anchovi from the Sofia village of Chepintsi. Husbands are severely tortured – they are tied up, stabbed, kicked and punched. Among the attackers was the SDVR employee Dimcho Dimov – the Policeman.
The criminals want to know where the money is, and even though the victims are giving everything they have, the bandits are not calming down. The family experienced the greatest horror when their two daughters – aged 16 and 11 – were raped in front of their parents by the recidivist Ivaylo Rangelov. The robbers left their home with a loot of BGN 90,150. The Ministry of Internal Affairs worked hard and arrested the criminals, but the case dragged on for 18 years.
Only on April 18, 2016, six of the attackers were sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Supreme Court of Cassation. At that time, the seventh – Ivaylo Rangelov, had been dead for 11 years.
