After a decade as president of Unicef Galicia committee, the time has come to end my mandate, according to the limits set by the statutes. I feel a sensation of vertigo after 20 years linked to the organization, but at the same time a deep feeling of gratitude for this gift that life has given me: being able to work all these years with the objective of guaranteeing the rights of children, in everything anytime and anywhere.
It is time to look back and value all the achievements achieved for boys and girls in Galicia and in the world. Advances that are the result of the commitment, effort and dedication of the Unicef Galicia Committee team and that have been possible thanks to the support of all our allies, public administrations, media, private sector, third sector, academia and 27,556 members.
I am proud of the progress made in the field of child and adolescent participation. Seven municipalities have stable bodies of this type; We have held three regional meetings in the community and the Regional Council for Child and Adolescent Participation has been launched.
In the educational field, I want to highlight the Unicef Spain Rights Education program, which benefits more than 5,500 students in Galicia. Nine centers in which children’s rights are the guide in every decision and every initiative. And we must also highlight the impact made to achieve free education in the first cycle of early childhood education (0-3).
On the other hand, we prepared the study Impact of Technology in Adolescence in Galicia, in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela and the General Council of Computer Engineering Colleges, from which data and opinions of more than 3,000 ESO adolescents were derived. from Galicia. Relationship, information and communication technologies (RIC) offer great opportunities, but they also entail great risks that directly impact your well-being and mental health.
I want to refer to the alliances established with the public and private sectors in the community, with the aim of alleviating situations of extreme vulnerability in the world derived from covid-19, the climate crisis and the wars that ravage so many corners of the planet.
My commitment to children does not end here, because the defense of children’s rights is my vocation; It will continue to be part of my daily life to guarantee their survival, promote their protection and make effective their right to health, physical and mental, and to quality education.
Always with you, Unicef!
