It won’t be long before 2023 will be over. With several Amsterdam residents who have been in the news at AT5, we look back and forward in the last days of the year. Today we do this with Myriam Corzilius, who has been fighting for a bicycle bridge over the IJ on behalf of the Amsterdam Bicycle Museum for years.
“There has been talk about the bridge for 125 years, now action is finally being taken,” says an enthusiastic Myriam. She has been campaigning for a bicycle bridge for years, but plans to build the bridge were repeatedly postponed until last year.
This year Myriam came one step closer to her dream, because in November it became clear that the municipality would release 100 million for the bridge.
Cycling demo
It didn’t seem like that at the beginning of this year. In January Myriam organized another bicycle demonstration. Together with hundreds of supporters, she braved the pouring rain to hand over a petition to traffic councilor Melanie van der Horst at the end of the ride at the Stopera.
Three months later it was announced that the council once again had plans to release money for a bicycle bridge. These plans were also approved by the council last November.
In retrospect, Myriam considers that last moment as the highlight of her year. “I’m glad we took the action.” Is her work done? “No,” Myriam says determinedly. “We’ll keep going until that bridge is built.”
