Myopia usually begins in childhood but may develop and progress in adulthood (adult-onset myopia).
Research (COMET cohort) found that more than 50% of child subjects still have myopia worsening at the age of 15, nearly 25% still develop myopia at the age of 18, and 10% still have myopia worsening at the age of 21. In addition, some studies have found that among adult subjects in their 20s, about 20% of myopia can progress up to -1D (commonly known as 100 degrees myopia). Among those 20 to 25 years old: about 50% have an increase of at least -0.75D (an increase of 75 degrees of myopia); 35-40 years old: about 25% also have an increase of at least -0.75D. In other words, although three-quarters of adults’ myopia has stabilized by age 18, nearly one-quarter will develop myopia in adulthood.
Current data confirm that myopia can worsen in the young adult population. Although the main reasons for the progression of myopia in adults are not yet clear, high-risk factors for the onset of myopia in adults are known, and are mainly related to East Asian ethnicity, female gender, myopic parents, and less time for outdoor activities. The higher the degree of myopia, the greater the risk of related eye diseases and complications. Therefore, myopia prevention and control must be carried out in this age group, and treatment should be continued.
The amount of time adults spend using electronics and working indoors has increased over the past three years. We know that the peripheral visual environment plays an important role in the development of myopia. In the two years since the COVID-19 pandemic, about 30% of young people have developed myopia of more than -0.75 D. Electronic use, online education and time spent indoors also increased during this period. We are beginning to understand that adults are also at risk for developing myopia. To date, there is limited research on myopia control options in adults. Today’s adults should also be aware of myopia prevention and control, and try to slow down the progression of myopia as much as possible. Friends in need can communicate more with ophthalmologists to learn about myopia prevention and control strategies and eliminate other causes of increased myopia.
