At least 74 people have been killed in the floods caused by Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar, according to a new tally by authorities who express fears that the death toll will rise after the fate of 89 residents is unknown.
The previous toll was 33 dead and more than 235,000 displaced.
Dead also in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand
Floods and landslides have killed around 350 people in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand – countries hit by Typhoon Yagi.
Damage to houses and infrastructure
Search and rescue operations continue in Myanmar, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper, which reports that more than 65,000 houses, roads and bridges have been destroyed. Large tracts of farmland have been flooded in the central part of the country, around the capital Naypyidaw, while landslides were reported in several mountainous areas.
Appeal for help from abroad
The head of Myanmar’s junta, General Min Aung Laing, appealed for help from abroad on Saturday, although he had previously refused it on a similar occasion. In June 2023, it had suspended the permits of aid workers trying to help the nearly one million affected by Cyclone Moka. The United Nations then denounced the “incomprehensible” decision.
