Myanmar Military Releases Thousands of Detained Demonstrators

Thousands demonstrator muda anti-coup d’etat Myanmar detained by security forces in Yangon was eventually released.

The release, said activists, was after calls from the West and the United Nations, Tuesday (9/8).

Youth activist Shar Ya Mone said he was in a building with 15 to 20 other people, but is now able to return home.


“There are lots of free car rides and people are welcoming the protesters,” Shar Ya Mone said by telephone Reuters.

He promised to continue demonstrating until the dictatorship in Myanmar ends.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres previously called for “maximum restraint” and safe release for all protesters without violence or arrest. A call that was also echoed by the US and British embassies in Myanmar.

Earlier, thousands of people opposed a curfew to take to the streets in Myanmar’s main city to support youth in Sanchaung district, where they hold daily protests.

On Monday the police announced they would search the house in Saunchang. Determines if there are people from outside the district and will punish anyone caught hiding them.

Other protesters posted on social media that they could leave the area around 5 a.m. after the security forces withdrew.

Advocacy rights groups say about 50 people were arrested in Sanchaung after police ransacked homes, although investigations are still ongoing.

A spokesman for the military junta did not reply when asked for comment.

Government owned television MRTV once said, “The government’s patience is exhausted and while trying to minimize casualties in stopping the riots most people seek complete stability (and) are calling for more effective action against the riots.”

Three protesters were killed during demonstrations in northern Myanmar and the Irrawaddy Delta on Monday, according to eye witnesses and local media.

The recent deaths increased the number of people who died during the ongoing coup. The United Nations has recorded more than 50 people killed by police and soldiers so far, fighting the military regime

Last week, the United Nations said the true death toll was likely much higher than the confirmed toll.
