BANGKOK, KOMPAS.TV — An army truck crashes into a peaceful march of anti-government protesters in the city of Yangon, Myanmar, Sunday (12/5/2021).

The incident killed at least five protesters, witnesses and protest organizers said, as reported by Associated Press, Sunday.

The rally was one of at least three held in Yangon.

Similar demonstrations were reported in other parts of the country a day ahead of the verdict in the first of about a dozen criminal cases against Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was ousted in the military on February 1.

A video posted on social media showed a small army truck speeding towards protesters from behind.

Voices can be heard, saying: “The car is coming… Please help! It hit the children… Oh! … Die! … Run run!” The video shows about a dozen people running from the place.

A witness told The Associated PressThe protesters were just two minutes out on the highway when a military truck hit them, leaving three people with no signs of life lying on the road.

“About 5 armed soldiers got out of the vehicle and chased the protesters,” said the witness who did not want to be named for fear of arrest.

“They opened fire and also arrested young children who were hit by cars. At least 10 people were arrested.”
