NAYPYIDAW, KOMPAS.TVMyanmar’s military junta reportedly struggles to recruit new members, after only a few people apply to enter the country’s military academy.

The difficulty was allegedly due to the military coup and brutal actions against anti-regime protesters.

The lack of new recruits is believed to be a further blow to the military.

This is because more than 1,500 personnel chose to defect from the army, including one hundred officers, after the military junta launched a coup in February.

The military junta on Thursday (2/9/2021) announced through media it controls that the deadline for military academy enrollment has been extended for the second time.

Previously, the registration deadline was also extended last August due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the defected former military captain, the extension was due to the fact that there have only been about 100 registrants so far in the three military academies.

“A total of 100 people have applied to military academies this year. Most of the candidates come from military families,” said Captain Lin Htet Aung who is also the founder of People’s Embrace The Irrawaddy.
