Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Leader military coup Myanmar General Min Aung Hlaing stated that Russia is a true friend.
Their closeness was reflected when Russian representatives attended the commemoration of Armed Forces Day which is celebrated by the Myanmar military, Saturday (27/3).
“Russia is a true friend,” Min Aung Hlaing quoted him as saying Reuters.
Russia was represented directly by Deputy Minister of Defense Alexander Fomin. He was also present at the parade in Naypyitaw, having met with the senior junta leaders the previous day.
Eight international delegates attended today’s event in Myanmar including representatives from China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
All of these countries sent representatives, only Russia sent ministry officials. This is in the spotlight amid international pressure on the junta to mount this week with new US and European sanctions.
Previously, it was reported that anti-coup protests in Myanmar have again claimed civilian victims. To date, more than 90 Myanmar citizens have been killed by the military.
News portal Myanmar Now said 91 people were killed across the country by security forces.
Even the victims are not only adults. A boy reported by local media as being five years old was among at least 29 people killed in Mandalay and 24 in Yangon.
“Today is an embarrassing day for the armed forces,” said Dr. Sasa, a spokesman for CRPH, an anti-coup group formed by MPs who were overthrown in a forum online.
Earlier, state television had said on Friday (26/3) that protesters risked being shot in the head and back if they opposed today’s coup.
Even so, demonstrators opposing the coup appeared in the streets of Yangon, Mandalay and other cities.
