Bangkok –
Thailand deployed a number of its fighter jets after detecting a military aircraft Myanmar that infiltrated its airspace. Thailand also ordered its defense attache to issue a warning to Myanmar junta government related to the incident.
As reported ReutersOn Friday (1/7/2022), the Thai Air Force spokesman, Deputy Air Marshal Prapat Sonjaidee, said two Thai F-16 fighter jets were deployed when radar detected the presence of a foreign aircraft in Thai airspace near the Myanmar border.
This incident reportedly occurred on Thursday (30/6) morning local time before noon. It said the Myanmar military plane was found to have violated Thai airspace while carrying out combat operations against local ethnic armed groups.
“An aircraft from an unknown side has violated the border over the area of Phop Phra district in Tak province, while attacking an armed ethnic group along the border,” Prapat said in a statement.
There has been no official response from Myanmar’s military junta regarding the incident reported by Thailand.
Myanmar’s military has stepped up operations against the armed ethnic minority group since launching a coup against the country’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, last year. Myanmar’s military is also facing resistance from many groups, from old enemies to new militia groups.
Activists and humanitarian aid groups have criticized the Myanmar junta for carrying out artillery and air strikes on civilian areas. The United Nations’ humanitarian agency this week estimated that nearly 760,000 people have been displaced by the conflict in Myanmar since the coup.
